Combi Boiler Installation

Grants · checked 23 October 2026

Is there a grant for a new boiler?

Short answer: no. SEAI doesn't fund a new gas or oil boiler. Here's what you can get, and when it's worth it.

No grant for a gas or oil boiler

SEAI says it "does not provide grants for the installation of new or replacement fossil fuel boilers, such as gas or oil boilers" (SEAI). Its grants cover insulation, heat pumps, heating controls, windows and doors, solar and batteries instead.

€700 heating controls grant

Yes. It upgrades your existing heating system, so no heat pump is needed. SEAI pays €700 for homes built and occupied before 2011 with an MPRN, and you can't also claim the heat pump grant. Get grant approval before any work starts (SEAI). SEAI's technical rules also limit it to homes that had no or very basic controls (SEAI bulletin). Good controls (zoned heating, a programmable or smart thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves) cut the gas a new boiler burns.

€2,000 boiler scrappage grant

Part of the SEAI heat pump grant: up to €2,000 extra when a heat pump replaces an oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage heating system. With up to €10,500 for the heat pump and up to €2,000 for upgrading the radiators, a house can get up to €14,500 in total (SEAI). The Government announced it on 29 September 2026; reports differed on when it formally starts, so check the current position with SEAI before you plan around it (gov.ie).

So what should you do?

If your boiler has failed and you need heat this winter, a new combi is the quick, cheaper fix, with no grant. If you have time, price a heat pump too: up to €14,500 in grants changes the maths, especially in a well-insulated house.

Is a ban coming?

Not for existing homes. Nothing stops you replacing a gas or oil boiler in your house. The Building Regulations only ask that a replacement boiler reaches 90% seasonal efficiency where practicable, which in practice means a condensing boiler (TGD L). New homes have effectively moved off fossil fuel boilers since 2019 (gov.ie), and as of July 2026 there was still no phase-out date for existing homes (Climate Change Advisory Council).
