Oil combi boilers
Where there's no gas main, most Irish homes heat with oil. An oil combi works like a gas combi: hot water on demand, no cylinder, no attic tank.
Combi or standard oil boiler?
The same rule applies as with gas. One bathroom and good mains pressure suits a combi. A busy house with several showers is usually better with a standard boiler and a cylinder. Many oil combis are fitted outdoors in a weatherproof casing, which frees space inside.
What it costs
Published oil boiler prices run from €2,500 to €3,600, median €3,000, across 6 installers. Ask for a written price that includes removal of the old boiler, the flue, commissioning and the OFTEC paperwork.

Before you replace oil with oil
In September 2026 the Government announced a €2,000 boiler scrappage grant for homes that replace an oil or gas boiler with a heat pump. It sits on top of the heat pump grant, which now goes up to €14,500 in total for a house (SEAI, gov.ie). It doesn't pay towards a new oil boiler, but it's worth pricing both before you decide.
Questions people ask
How much is a new oil boiler in Ireland?
Published oil boiler prices run from €2,500 to €3,600, median €3,000, across 6 installers. Ask for a written price that includes removal of the old boiler, the flue, commissioning and the OFTEC paperwork.
Is there a grant for a new oil boiler?
No. In SEAI's own words, it "does not provide grants for the installation of new or replacement fossil fuel boilers, such as gas or oil boilers" (SEAI). You may get the €700 heating controls grant if your home was built and occupied before 2011 (SEAI). The €2,000 boiler scrappage grant only applies when a heat pump replaces the boiler.
Who installs oil boilers?
Ask for an OFTEC-registered technician. OFTEC registration shows the technician has been trained and assessed for oil heating. Ask to see their OFTEC card.
